Max Garcia: Painter & Medicine Musician

During my recent healing journey to Cabo San Lucas, I had the pleasure of meeting Max Garcia while waiting for his wife, a shamanic practitioner, to perform a chakra alignment and cleansing. One of his paintings immediately caught my attention, prompting a conversation about its subject matter and various other topics. As it turns out, I have a background in art history, which was one of my favorite subjects during high school.

The painting featured a stunning, vibrant green color that immediately caught my attention. At the time, I couldn’t quite understand why I was drawn to it, as green has never been one of my favorite colors. It wasn’t until after my chakra alignment that I realized the reason behind this attraction. The alignment had activated my heart chakra, which allowed me to perceive the most beautiful shade of green during the process. Prior to this experience, I had never been particularly fond of the color green.

Through this experience, I’ve come to understand that the color we are most averse to may often correspond to a blockage in the related chakra. For example, my wife had a strong aversion to the color orange, which, upon further reflection, aligned with a blockage in her Sacral Chakra. So, I encourage you to observe which colors seem to be lacking in your life—it might reveal important insights about the alignment of your chakras.

Back to Max. I was very interested about Max's painting and decided to ask him a few questions:

Divad: Can you tell us about your artistic background and how you got started as a painter?

Max: I started doing school work when I was 15, my classmates hired me to do their drawings for their homework. Later in high school I studied graphic design and that's where I started painting. I started making copies of famous paintings and studying the lives of painters.

Divad: What styles or techniques do you prefer to work with, and how have you developed your unique approach?

Max: What I use the most is the acrylic painting technique, it's my favorite although I also use it as a watercolor and as an oil painting water based for the painting, charcoal and pastels but only for practice not to dedicate myself to those techniques. I like to experiment with different textures and materials so acrylic painting gives me that breadth of development.

Divad: What is your creative process like when you start a new painting? Do you work with reference images or primarily from imagination?

Max: The development of a painting can vary from the inspiration of an image, an object or a mixture of colors, from there the idea begins, the intention.

Divad: Where do you draw your inspiration from? Are there particular artists, movements, or environments that influence your work?

Max: In the day to day, perceiving a whole range of possibilities between the people or objects with which I have contact from a motionless object to the meditation of a person.

Divad: Can you describe one of your favorite projects you've worked on and what made it stand out?

Max: My favorite project is about a painting that has the theme of freedom of races and ethnicity in the world and we had to paint an indigenous person and his environment!!

Max is also a talented musician who plays healing music. I’m excited to share a little about this, though I must admit, I’m still discovering what healing music truly sounds like. Stay tuned for my next post, where I’ll delve deeper into the world of healing music.
